Weather by: Ovidio Tamez

The Texas weather has been anything but predictable. One day it’s hot and the next day it is cold, one day it’s nice out and the next there is a thunder storm with tornado warnings. There really is no way to find out how the day is going to turn out; it might start off nice and end bad or vice versa.  People wonder when they should put their winter clothes up and go shopping for summer clothes as this wintery weather seems like it has no end.  Hopefully there is not much of this wintery weather left and it will be nice and sunny from now on but who knows.

Crazy Times 4/17/09 By: Melissa Sleeper

People have seemed to be getting more and more desperate lately. With the testing times that we are in, our society is put under pressure, economically and socially. As such, there are just some deeds done lately that are a little too extreme.

For instance, two women in the Los Angeles area committed fraud for money, but they didn’t just cheat on their taxes. They made up people off the top of their heads, giving them an insurance policy then killing them. The two would collect the money from insurance companies and funeral businesses across the state adding up to over a million dollars before they were caught.

Then here in our own area a grieving mother finds the oddest way of dealing with the death of her 21 year old son. She had to receive a court order so she could harvest her son’s sperm in order to impregnate a sergeant mother with her grandchildren. The court was at an ethical call for the case, but ended ruling it ok for the mother to harvest the semen and have her grandchildren.

Stressful Preparations for the Big Day 4/16/09 by: Amanda Smith

As prom quickly approaches, students are preparing for their night to be perfect. So perfect in fact that some tend to get stressed out. When you think about all of the things that have to be done, who wouldn’t let it get to them a little? For the past few months, girls have been rushing around in search of the perfect dress, shoes, and jewelry to tie it all together. On top of that, they are making tanning appointments every other day of the week, setting up the time to get their hair and nails done. And let’s face it, since SOME guys could care less about planning the transportation and meal, some girls are having to figure out the limo prices, where to meet, what time to meet and what time to make the dinner reservations at a restaurant that will please everyone. But the girls of KHS aren’t the only ones under pressure this time of year. The boys had to get up the nerve to ask the girl of their choice to accompany them to the big event, figure out the color they’ll need to match that of their date and get to the store in enough time to order the perfect match. Adding to the wardrobe, they’re trying to find the time to get their hair cut just right to look their best. Setting aside all the planning, the Kaufman High School Junior/Senior Prom will hopefully be a night we’ll all remember and will make all the stressful preparations worth the trouble.

Reach Out And Help...

Two KISD students were injured last Saturday in an explosion. They were both burned and may need skin grafts.

I have attached information about a blood drive in Kaufman this weekend. If you tell them when you donate that you wish to donate to the accounts of Taylor Becker or John Stamper, these boys are guaranteed blood if they need transfusions.

I should be getting an account number later in the day that you will also be able to present when you donate. I will send it when I receive it.

Thank you for your help,
Carey Murphy

Explosion on F.M. 2727  By: Ferrell Mason 3/26/09

On March 21st at around 8 PM, four boys, ranging from ages 13 to 17, were involved in a horrible explosion along F.M. 2727.

These boys were inside a workshop at the home of one of the boys

They tried to open a 55 gallon ethanol barrel with a plan to have a big enough barrel to hold a fire. They first tried to cut open the barrel with a saw, but with the amount of time that it was taking, they decided to use a blow torch to open the barrel.

Kaufman County Fire Marshal said the ethanol drum was completely sealed and still contained extremely flamable liquids.

This explosion sent two of the boys to a hospital in Dallas by a care-flight helicopter and the other two teens refused medical attention at the scene.

The two teens that were care-flighted are currently at the Parkland Hospital in the intensive care unit for burn victims.

Titanic's Fate

By: Melissa Sleeper 3-26-09

After years of residing in its watery grave for nearly a century, the great ship “The Titanic” has its fate in the hands of a maritime jurist, U.S. District Judge Rebecca Smith. She will make a ruling for the preservation of the ship so that that the artifacts remaining in it will not be sold off, but kept together in a public museum unlike some of the items that have already been sold for profits by marine salvagers.

This includes the 5,900 pieces of china, the passengers’ personal belongings, as well as some parts of the ships. An estimated market value of $110.9 million for the complete salvage of the ship is for its historical values not gold and other valuables.

Judge Rebecca Beach Smith will make her ruling officially some time next week to decide just where the great ship’s last resting place will be.

Help! Call 911! McDonald's is Out of McNuggets!!!! By:Anjanette Henson 3/4/09

Latreasa Goodman, of Florida, called 911 three times after she paid for a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets at a McDonald's but the restaurant ran out of them. Goodman made the calls after the restaurant refused to give a refund stating that, "all sales were final." The cashier of the McDonald's suggested taht she choose something else on the menu of equal price to the McNuggets, and offered the McDouble. "She's trying to force me to eat something off the menu and I don't want it," Goodman told 911. The dispatcher of the first call asked if there was a manager available, but continued to listen to Goodman's complaints. The dispatcher then said she would send someone. On the second 911 call the dispatcher said that he was aware of the incident and said, "we've got an officer coming out there to talk to you." Goodman was cited on a misuse of 911 charges. A McDonald's spokesperson said thta Goodman should have been given a refund and is being sent a gift card for a free meal.

Daylight Savings

by: Melissa Sleeper 3-5-09

It's that time of year again! Daylight savings is this Sunday and it's the most dreaded of times. Though clocks only spring forward just an hour, it takes a huge adjustment for our bodies to get used to, depriving us of the much needed hour of sleep and making people more on edge.
How can you avoid the crankiness and inevitable drowsiness that follows Daylight-Savings time? Some people have their own unique way of getting used to the change, but some sleep experts have compiled a list of suggestions that will help the transition go more smoothly.
1. Start going to sleep earlier a few days in advance of Daylight-savings and waking up earlier will help get you a jump start on the missing hour.
2. Don't take naps during the days following D.S.T. It will only make things worst for your body and the others around you.
3. Don't resort to caffeine to help keep you up. We all know of the crashing it causes later, which will lead to you being more tired than before.
4. The obvious, keep a healthy meal and drinking lots of water to will help your body adjust more quickly.
5. Avoid driving as much as possible! Reports have shown that there is a n increase in auto accidents in the week that follows D.S.T. due to the mental awareness being lower from the sleep deprivation.

Safety Tips For Teens By: Ferrell Mason 2/6/09

Everyone has heard the common, yet still important, safety lessons: Look both ways before crossing the street; buckle your seatbelt; don’t talk to strangers.

The Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency, is urging kids to add one more lesson to this list: Don’t post information about yourself online that you don’t want the whole world to know. The Internet is the world’s biggest information exchange: many more people could see your information that you intend, including your parents, your teachers, your employer, the police, and even strangers that could be dangerous.

Social networking sites have added a new factor to the “friends of friends” equation. By providing information about yourself and using blogs, chat rooms, email, or instant messaging, you can communicate, either within a limited community, or with the world at large. But while the sites can increase your circle of friends, they can also increase your exposure to people who have less-than-friendly intentions. Everyone has heard the stories about people who were stalked by someone they met online, had their identity stolen, or had their computer hacked. So it is always better to simply not allow any personal information to be exposed on the internet.

On this previous Super Bowl Sunday, the First Baptist Church was granted a guess speaker. This speaker was NFL Hall of Famer, and old Cowboy, Rayfield Wright. He visited the morning services and talked about his life and how God has inspired him to achieve his dreams. He was a great and inspirational speaker, that I believe helped reach a lot of people.

Justice is Served By: Amanda Smith 2/6/09

Nearly a year a later, 28-year old Agustin Renteria, who was involved in a two-vehicle crash that ended the life of June Nalls and injured two teenage boys, pleaded guilty for his role in the accident. Renteria was sentenced seven years in a Texas Department of Corrections facility. After receiving a $1,000 fine, he will be eligible for parole after he serves 3 ½ years of his time.

Role Models by: Ovidio Tamez

Michael Phelps is a big influence on many people and especially kids. There was a picture of Michael Phelps that might change is complexion for a long time and it was not a picture of him winning a gold medal instead it was a picture of him smoking pot.  The public has to understand that this guy is only 23 and accidents happen. Phelps apologized in public to everyone for the picture, he do not deny it he confessed which takes guts I will give him credit for that. Phelps was suspended 3 months by USA swimming which is just a minimal punishment in my opinion. He should have known better and should have been a better role model.

By:Melissa Sleeper 1-30-09

This pass holiday season our local Wells Fargo had on display a four foot tall plush pony named ‘Mollie.’ It is one of the nine plush replicas of the original horses that pulled the Wells Fargo Carriage in the 19th Century.  Over 400 of the plush ponies were displayed in Wells Fargos across the state during the holiday season, and when the season is over with the Wells Fargo donates the pony to a local school or charity organization of their choice.

Our local Wells Fargo donated its “Mollie” to the Emergency Children’s Shelter for the fifth year in a row along with a $1,000 donation from Lennilu Adams in memory of Betty Hall. The money will be used to buy the children’s clothing

A New Backyard

By:Melissa Sleeper 1-30-09

The children’s Advocacy Center of Kaufman County now has a new backyard thanks to the dedicated work of “Lowe’s Heroes”. With a playground set and a sitting garden, the center has a more welcoming atmosphere for the children, abused and neglected, that visit it.

The “Lowe’s Heroes” team is made of the employees of the local store in Forney, nonprofit organizations, and locals from the community that volunteer their time to help centers such as the Children’s Advocacy Center. Since the center just opened up in December of 2008, it needs all the help it can get from charitable groups such as “Lowe’s Heroes.”

Tobacco on Campus By: Amanda Smith 1-22-09

Lately, multiple students have attempted getting away with smoking or dipping on school property. This is a very serious offense that the teachers and police program are not taking lightly. Simply having tobacco in your presence on campus is illegal. First offenders could be fined up to $500, second offenders a $750 fine, third offenders up to $1000 fine or 3-day license suspension, and four or more offenses could get their license completely revoked. Don’t risk it!

Norman Smith by: Jackie LaQuey 1/16/08

Norman Smith was a normal Dallas police officer. He was shot threw the door in the head while trying arrest a man in south Dallas. Earlier he was dealing with the investigation of the Dec 30th gas pipe shooting in far south Dallas. Later that night we realized that him being shot had no affiliation with it. The Dallas Mavericks were once my favorite team to watch on tv. They would go to the playoffs every year and usually go about 3 rounds deep. They have slowly but surely lost their potential and players and are now on a 4 game loosing streak. The last game that they played was against the New Orleans Hornets. Chris Paul was 3 steals away from getting a quadruple double because our defense was not able to defend him. The team that was once my favorite is no longer.

This up coming Monday, KHS is out of school for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. KHS will be out of school to honor Mr. King for all that he did for this great country. He was a great person that was sadly assassinated on April 4, 1968. In fact, today is Mr. King's birthday. At the age of thiry-five, he was the youngest man to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also remembered for his "I Have a Dream" speech he gave in Washington D.C. in front of 250,000 people. So on Monday, when you go through the day, remember everything that he did for this country and pay him respect.

Adam "Pacman" Jones by: Christian Serrano

Adam "Pacman" Jones was released by the Dallas Cowboys. Pacman had many problems throughout the season.  Pacman's lifestyle did not seem to have an end in sight.  Although he is a major talent with plenty of potential he fails to stay out of trouble. According to many  Cowboys fans, Pacman made the Dallas Cowboys look really dumb after it was all said and done.  The Cowboys traded a draft pick for Pacman Jones although they were aware of his past.   The Cowboys lack of judgement came back to hurt them in the long run. Many NFL teams have chosen not to give Pacman Jones another chance.  Any team that would do so is taking a huge risk.

On the Sidelines By Megan Frierson

Our football team has taken the field with a driving power unlike any before. We’ve followed them game to game, all over the map, and have seen them labeled Area Champions. However, the team is not the only team kickin’ butt out on the field. I have had the wonderful opportunity to interview three lovely young ladies (Sr.’s Andrea Grimsley, Stephanie Albin, and Christian Castillo) from the various organizations involved within the entertainment of the crowd when the football team is soaking in their half-time glory. Each girl was confronted with the same two questions: (1) what is you’re favorite part of being a part of football season? And (2) if you could tell the returning members of your squad, team, and/or band, what would it be?

(1) AG: Cheering on the sidelines at the game.
(2) AG: I hope to see the standards of our organization raised considerably. The
girls have the spirit in them, it’s just a matter of pulling it through.

(1)   SA: My favorite part of the football season is the united atmosphere of the school and all of its programs.
(2)   SA: I would tell them that although high school is difficult, there are some
priceless moments that make it all worth it.

(1)   CC: Singing the fight song with all of the players at the end of each game.
When we sing it, it’s like all the players’ emotions of sadness or happiness come out and for those couple seconds I feel that too; it makes me a part of the team.
(2)   CC: I would advise the girls to practice, practice, practice. Even if some of the routines seem easy and simple, practicing on your own time really pays off.

The football players might think they’re just playing a game, but as seen from the thoughts of these students, it’s something much more than they could imagine.

by: Makenzi Davis

Last week the Interact Club sponsered the can food drive through the school. The objective was to raise as many cans as possible, not only to benefit the Kaufman Christian Help Center, but to win a party for the student's respective class.  Coach Ishee's fifth period class was the big winner, donating over 820 cans to the cause.  The school as a whole raised over 2,400 cans.  Mrs. Carter, Interact Club sponsor, and B.J. Vincik, Interact Club president, would like to thank everybody who participated in the drive.  Many families will be helped through this cause.

Rachel's Challenge by: Amanda Smith

To make our school a better place, there are challenges you as students can overcome. It just takes one person to start a chain reaction.

-         Look for the best in others & eliminate prejudice.

-         Dare to dream and set goals.

-         Choose positive influences.

-         Kind words + actions = huge results.

-         Start a chain reaction with family and friends.

Adopt A Kid

It is that time of the year again!  Time to give to others.  Every year at KHS we participate in a program called Adopt A Kid.  This is where each 2nd period class prepares a special party for a child who may not get to experience Christmas due to financial misfortune.  These classes shower each child with gifts, food, and lots of attention.  Below Mrs. Lucas and Mrs. Eldrige have provided us with a list of guidelines to use when shopping for your selected child or children for your second period class Christmas party. These guidelines are just suggestions to help your class. They have asked us to please keep the party and presents as simple as possible. Any gift the children receive will be greatly appreciated by them and their parents.
THE LIST:
Dress code appropriate clothes (shirt, pants, dresses)

Dress code appropriate outerwear (coats, jackets, gloves, hoodies ( these kids would be thrilled to receive a Kaufman shirt or hoodie to wear to school)
Underclothing (socks, underwear)
Pajamas
Shoes
Toys (just a few are all your class needs to do, don’t feel like you have to go overboard and buy expensive toys)
Before wrapping your presents, please cut tags off of clothing. Also either cut the clothing label or write the child’s name on it. Put their name somewhere on the toy. Mrs. Lucas also has a metal engraver if you need to borrow it. Clothing does not need to be designer brand names or very expensive as well. The most requested item from the school and parents is clothing that is in dress code.

If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Lucas or Mrs. Eldrige or drop by room A6 or A7.
Kaufman High School Newspaper would like to thank Christy Lucas And Celia Eldridge in advance for all their hard work to make this possible.

Yep, it's that time again. FCCLA will be organizing the project for our school and Helen Edwards Early Childhood Center. This event will be held on Friday, December 12th. Each class will be assigned one child to have a party for this year. For our new teachers, this is a fun project. Every year, KHS makes plans for children from Helen Edwards Early Childhood Center to come over for a Christmas party. The children that attend are the community's less fortunate. Each 2nd period class has the opportunity to "adopt" a child. Your class willl be responsible for buying your child gifts and planning a party! Those of us who have participated in the past know how fun and fulfilling this day is to us all.
