UIL

Tomorrow, around lunch time, the Kaufman High School Roaring Lion Band will be leaving to go to a UIL competition. They will be competing against this district’s top bands, including their biggest rival, Canton. They will be recording three pieces: Bravura (a march), American Folk Rhapsody, and Overture for Winds, as well as competing in sight reading. The highest score would be a 1, 1, 1, ranking them superior over all. Wish them luck, they’ve been working hard since the end of football season.

Texas Weather. By Kalee Nixon 1/30/09

Many Texans have realized we have crazy weather. One day it's below freezing and the next day its 70 degrees. Most Texans hope for snow but most of the time we are not fortunate. A bad weather day due to ice is all most Texans see, especially here in Kaufman. But I am sure most of us would agree that we are ready for a hot Texas summer.

Hard Times! By: Michael Mayhew 1/8/09

2008 left the economy struggling to recover for the future in 2009. It also left it difficult for teenagers in Kaufman to seek jobs when adults are also having a hard time finding a job with the economy struggling. So now all we can hope for is that our President-Elect,Barack Obama, to help lead us through this long period of hard times.

We're Puttin' a Spin on Things
1/9/09 B.J. Vincick

For every home game that is played, a pep-rally is held in order to pump up our players for the coming night, and the lionettes do our part by performing a special dance. Each dance is different for each pep-rally and this Friday, be SURE to attend. Lets just say we're putting a spin on things *wink wink*. It's gonna be WAY cool, but you gotta come see for yourself if you want to find out!

We're Goin Back to 2005
11/2008 Megan Frierson

This Friday is the last home football game of the 08-09 football season as well as Senior Night. Please attend the game to support your seniors in their last night on the field.  A pep-rally will be held in honor of the seniors, in which the senior members of the drill team will be bringing back a dance from their freshman year. Get ready to have a blast; we'll see you in the stands!

Competition's 'Round the Corner
11/2008 -- Megan Frierson

With football season coming to a close (though hopefully not anytime too soon), the drill team is drawing away from football routines and plunging head first into competition season. This years team will be competing in three categories: modern, novelty, and military. The whole studio is buzzing with excitement about the upcoming season, and the expectations are high to pull in sweepstakes for every routine. With their eyes on the title of Grand Champion, the team will be working harder than ever before. It's gonna take a lot of effort, but the girls will be greatly rewarded in the end.

Mrs. Hetmer by: Garrett Lands

Teacher of the year was announced and I did'nt quite agree with who was winner. I mean Coach Ishee is a fantastic teacher, but Mrs. Hetmer is a better choice for teacher of the year. She is a great teacher and will always work with you no matter the what the situation is. Coach Ishee isn't as lenient, but he is very flexible though. Even though Coach Ishee is a good teacher and deserved to win teacher of the year, I think that Mrs. Hetmer had him beat by a little bit.

Beauty Tips
1/09 -- Megan Frierson

                                                                           Beauty Tips
Written by Audry Hepburn when asked to share her "beauty tips", later read at her funeral:

                                                              "For attractive lips,
                                                                            speak words of kindness.
                                                              For lovely eyes,
seek out the good in people
                                                              For beautiful hair,
let a child run his/her hands through it once a day
                                                              For poise,
walk with the knowlede that you never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed,
revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone."

Sometimes, I feel as if we as humans, and especially teenagers, get so caught up in physical beauty, that we let our souls whither and turn cold. Though it is more difficult to embrace your enemy than to beat them down, it makes your heart that much stronger. The human tongue is our worst weapon, and is used all too freely. Society needs to focus more on internal beauty versus external, or we will destroy ourselves faster than any war. When I ventured upon the poem above, it struck a chord. I thought to myself, "If everybody followed THOSE tips versus the ones you find in "Cosmo" or "Seventeen", the change that would take place would be phenomenal!" Physical beauty is only temporary; a beautiful soul will last forever.

A Select Few
1/15/09 - Megan Frierson

Last semester, the Kaufman High School Roaring Lion Band competed in a rigorous competition - ATSSB (All Texas Small State Bands). This competition is brimming over with hundreds of students, all competing for entry into one of two bands - ATSSB Honor Band, and ATSSB All State Band. Achieving such a position is no easy task; those lucky few who made it in will glady tell you so. This Friday and Saturday, those students will be traveling to Canton Highschool for a two day clinic, directed by two famous directors, at the end of which will be a performance by both bands. Only one student was able to make it into the All State Band; returning for his second year is our very own symphonic trombone player, Bret Ryan. Also about 20 others made it into Honors. If you see these students in the hallways, please congratulate them. They have achieved a goal that many could not.
